3-Step Art Journal Page Idea Done In 15 Minutes
Whenever you don’t have much time or ideas, but you need to make something creative, you can! Despite lack of time, there are ways you can express your creativity.
That’s why I’m sharing this simple art journal page idea you can do right now, and in under 15 minutes.
You can always refer back to my spread so you can see the steps I made.

Supplies you’ll need
- art journal/paper – this works best on an art journal spread (2 pages)
- acrylic paint
- palette knife or an old credit/gift card
- a magazine image or a photo
- a paintbrush for writing, or a marker
Step 1
Choose 2 or three colors of acrylic paint and use a palette knife/card to spread it on the paper. Work horizontally so you get a dynamic effect of movement.
Don’t worry about perfect strokes, the more imperfect they are, the more dynamic they’ll look. Just go with the flow and let your tool slide over the page. Palette knife or a card will leave some white space and that’s also what you’re looking for. The point is not to cover the whole paper in color strokes.
Then let the paint dry.
Step 2
While the background is drying, cut out the magazine image.
Use UHU glue stick or any other glue you have and put your image on either side of the background, left or right. Mine is on the right because my magazine image dictated the direction so I have a nice movement.
Add some paint with the palette knife or a card over the image as well. This will blend it more with the background and make the whole page more cohesive.
Step 3
When everything is dry, choose a word that’s important to you today and write it out in big letters so it covers most of the central horizontal area. You want it to really stick out. But of you prefer something smaller, do your thing.
I used black ink and a brush to write but you can use anything you have. And black works great if your background is lighter like mine. If your background is darker, choose a lighter color to write with. This will create fun and effective contrast.
You can also sprinke some black paint here and there, for a final touch.
Wasn’t it easy?

And that’s it. In three little steps you have made a wonderful, effective, and dynamic page. You can use this simple system any time you don’t have time or ideas on where to start.
